Get ready for your exam

A C&P exam (Compensation and Pension exam) is a free appointment where a doctor checks your condition for VA and writes down what they find, so VA can decide your claim.

Pick your condition. Each guide shows what the examiner will do, VA's rating levels in plain words, what to measure or track at home, and a checklist you can print. A spouse or grown child can read it out loud with you.

Joints and back

Measured with a protractor-like tool. Each guide shows you how to measure at home, with a helper.

  • Back (lower or mid back)
  • Knee
  • Shoulder and arm
  • Neck
  • Ankle
  • Hip and thigh
  • Feet (flat feet, heel pain)
  • Sciatica (nerve pain down the leg)
  • Elbow and forearm
  • Wrist
  • Hand and fingers

Other conditions

Hearing, mental health, sleep, breathing, stomach and more. Each guide shows what to track before your exam.

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Hearing loss
  • PTSD, depression and anxiety
  • Sleep apnea
  • Migraines and bad headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Acid reflux (GERD)
  • Scars
  • Nerve damage in arms or legs (neuropathy)
  • Diabetes (type 2)
  • Sinus and stuffy nose
  • Asthma and breathing
  • IBS (bowel problems)
  • Brain injury (TBI)
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
