Welcome back, Brave community. This week’s reads offer practical ways to approach life after service. Some focus on questions worth asking before a big decision. Others invite you to make daily life a little easier.
You do not need to tackle everything this weekend. Choose what feels useful right now.
This week on the podcast
Air Force Lab Tech's Journey: Injury, VA Struggle & Victory features Air Force Veteran Mark Barlet, CEO of AccessForge.
Mark joins host Ed Parcaut to discuss his path into clinical microbiology. The conversation explores service-connected disability and the VA claims process. It also covers invisible injuries. Community care is another topic. Mark also discusses accessibility as a business advantage.
As you listen, consider which topic connects with your own questions. Write down one question you want to understand better. A personal story can offer perspective without matching your own experience.
The Field Notes recap below offers another way into the conversation.
Field Notes this week
- VA Appraisal vs. Home Inspection: Two Different Checks Before You Buy These checks answer different questions, so avoid assuming one replaces the other.
- Close Out Your Day With a Simple Evening Reset Give unfinished tasks a stopping point with a reset built around your actual schedule.
- Mark Barlet on Air Force Lab Work, Invisible Injuries, and Accessibility This recap highlights the conversation and offers questions to keep in mind while listening.
- You Can Miss Military Life Without Wanting It Back You can value your service while building a life that fits who you are now.
- Build a Veteran Gathering Around One Useful Task A small shared project can create an easy reason to spend time together.
One thing to do this weekend
Try a simple evening reset on a night that works for you.
Before you stop for the day, write down one unfinished task. Under it, write the next small step. Then leave the note where you will see it tomorrow.
The goal is not to finish everything tonight. It is to give that task a clear stopping point.
Build the reset around your real schedule. An ideal bedtime is not required. If the step feels too big, make it smaller. Let this be a modest experiment, not another standard to meet.
