How to Prepare for Your C&P Exam Without Overthinking It

This article demystifies the Compensation & Pension exam. Veterans will learn what to expect, what to bring, how to speak truthfully about symptoms, and why it’s okay to talk about the hard days.

The C&P exam — short for Compensation & Pension — is a key step in the VA benefits process. For many veterans, it’s also one of the most nerve-wracking.

But here’s the truth: You don’t have to fear this appointment. You just need to prepare.

It’s an evaluation scheduled by the VA to assess the severity and service connection of your condition. It helps them decide if — and how much — compensation you qualify for.

Common Misconceptions:

  • “It’s just a formality” — False. It heavily influences your rating.

  • “I need to tough it out and not complain” — False. This is your moment to be honest.

  • “They’re trying to catch me lying” — No. But they are looking for consistency.

How to Prepare:

1. Know what your claim is about.

If you filed for migraines, PTSD, or back pain — know your symptoms and how they affect your daily life.

2. Be specific about impact.

Don’t just say “it hurts.” Explain how it stops you from working, sleeping, socializing, etc.

3. Be honest — not heroic.

This isn’t the time to minimize. You’re not weak for saying, “I struggle.” You’re strong for showing up.

4. Bring a buddy or documentation.

If allowed, bring someone who can speak to what they’ve seen. You can also bring relevant medical records.

5. Expect awkward questions.

They might ask about hygiene, relationships, work, or mental health. Be truthful, even if it’s uncomfortable.

After the Exam:

  • Take notes about what was asked and how you answered.

  • Contact your support rep or claims advisor to share how it went.

Final Thought: The C&P exam isn’t a test of your worth — it’s a chance to make your reality understood.
